Family Law & Succession

We offer personalized advice to our clients in relation to their obligations under family law, as well as their options in making alternate arrangements with their partners and spouses.  We understand that relationships are complex, and we strive to work through the emotions to arrive at solutions that bring closure to both parties.

Family law can be a surprisingly significant factor in the succession plan of a family business, which can already be quite complicated in the instance of a family where some of the children contribute to the business and others do not.

Our Services

Trust Planning

Trusts may be designed to facilitate the transfer of corporate assets down to the next generation or an outside management group; they may also play a role in limiting exposure to family law proceedings.

Shareholder Agreements and Corporate Reorganizations

These may be implemented with the goal of clarifying roles and responsibilities in the business and control over certain assets upon a shareholder’s death, disability, or relationship breakdown.

Pre-Nuptial Marriage/ Cohabitation Agreements

These are often designed to establish the entitlements of partners and spouses in the event of relationship breakdown in a way that does not impact one spouse’s business or inheritance interests.
